MICKEY COMPARISON HOMEWORK

This model-sheet of Mickey Mouse comes from 1928, ten years before the 1938 version in the blog post below. Compare the two and analyse the ways in which Mickey changed in even that short space of time. In what ways has his personality changed through the differences in drawing style?

When youy have done this post an image of the central character from the animation you chose earlier in the week and analyse the way that figure is drawn. What does the style of drawing and physical characteristics tell us about the personality and traits of your chosen character.

STEAMBOAT WILLIE (1928)

Watch Walt Disney's first ever animated short film in full sound released originally in 1928. It is the first appearance of Mickey Mouse and shows how effective the combination of fantastical animated action with realistic sound and music can be.

On your blog post a link to the video and write a paragraph or two describing the different lessons we can learn about animation from studying Steamboat Willie. What tricks and techniques that we recognise from modern cartoons are being pioneered here? What technical and stylistic ideas are being developed? For example, we can see the use of animals taking on human characteristics (the technical term for this is, anthropomorphism) and we get a lot of use of exagerated facial expressions. Give examples from the clip to illustrate your points. Tag your post UNIT24-AO1

Animation Research - My Bestest cartoon

We're now going to move onto Animation. To start you thinking about cartoons and stop motion we would like you to do a small case study on your favourite animation.

This is to be done on the blog - so feel free to embed clips, interviews, links to official sites, relevant imagery.

The choice of animation is up to you. It could be your favourite Disney cartoon as a kids, the lastest CGI blockbuster, a cutting edge anime, a stop motion kids TV show, an advert, a music video - it just has to be animated and something you have a personal attachment to.

What animation technique was used
(identify it, describe, try to find any resources about to use that technique, what qualities does this technique have)

Describe you favourite part of the animation (a key scene, an effect) and explain why you like it.

Explain why you chose this animation - why you like it, what you thought when you first saw it.

Like any work we do - feel free to expand on what's required and fully develop your answers and response.
