CROSS HATCHING PEN AND INK DRAWING

Cross-hatching is drawing layers of parallel lines running in different directions to create the effect of shade and tone. Variations in ight and shadow can be created by varying the weight and width of the lines and the spaces between them.

Artists such as Giorgio Morandi and children's book illustrators like Maurice Sendak have used cross-hatching to great effect to add depth to their imagery.
