BOOK DESIGN REPORT

This report must cover your research, your planning and your final pitch and treatment. It should be at least 900 words in length, though there is no upper limit to the number of words. Each section needs to be at least 300 words.

It must be word processed  and uploaded to your blog by 10 a.m. on Monday 5 D.

You may include images and weblinks in your report.

Writing guidance- Book Design project

The following questions should guide your writing in each section, but you could include other points as well.

Part 1: Research

What research did you do?
What other books did you look at and where did you find them? (e.g. web, books, magazines, libraries, etc)
Choose one or two to discuss in some detail, including how design, fonts, colours and imagery are used.

Part 2: Planning your Illustrations

What stages did your planning go through?
What sketches did you do and how did you alter your ideas as you went along?
What were the techniques and effects that you used in your final designs?
What feedback did you get on your early ideas?

What were the main influences on your final design (including other illustrators that interested you)

Part 3: The Pitch and Treatment

Referring to the following blog post:

http://lramd.posterous.com/7-things-to-think-about-when-designing-your-c

show how your page layouts address the 7 design elements mentioned.

Write about what you learnt in terms of producing your outline, rationale, specifications and cover letter.
Overall, what do you feel about your final design, your presentation and this project?

PROPOSAL + TREATMENT WORKFLOW

This week you will be producing 4 A4 documents as part of your Pitch+Treatment proposal:

  1. OUTLINE
  2. RATIONALE
  3. SPECIFICATIONS
  4. COVER LETTER

Each page will include your own texts and supporting images and should be presented in a consistant manner as a professional package.

Assignment: Caterpillar Study Sheets

As Christina explained in her presentation, it's important to be able to draw your subject in "real life" before you can try and create a "stylised" or more "graphic" version for your illustrations

On two sheets of A4 you should produce a total of six drawings of caterpillars taken either from photographs found in books, images found online or from watching tv programmes or youtube videos.

The studies can be drawn in pencil or pen and ink or in colour or any combination of different media.

Bring your completed studies of at least six images (you can do as many more as you like) with you to Monday's lesson.
