SEEING THINGS DIFFERENTLY

Recreate this image as accurately as possible but first try and clear your mind of what the image is "supposed" to be. Do not think of it as a figure, but as a collection of lines and curves. As you look at each different part of the image try not to think, "this is an eye I have to draw now" but instead think, "here is a 45 degree angle" or "this line curves quite gently to the right"

CREATING A NEW FONT TYPESHEET

When you have scanned your font design and had it photocopied you must then adjust the levels (see last tutorial) to create a clean black & white design.

Using the files provided below you can then create your own TYPESHEET to showcase your font design.

Select each letter from your original file using the RECTANGULAR MARQUEE TOOL (M) and then COPY (CMD+C) and PASTE (CMD+V) each letter as a new layer in your typesheet file. Label each layer accordingly to make it easy to select individual letters.

Using your typesheet you can Copy/Paste individual letters into a new document to create words in your own unique typography

Find an interesting texture for a background layer and save your work to your blog

HOW TO CLEAN UP BLACK + WHITE LINE ART

Follow the SIX steps in the gallery to remind yourself how to clean up the black + white line art of your NAME DESIGN.

Once you have cleaned up the black and white image, set the LAYER MODE from NORMAL to MULTIPLY. You can then create a colour layer beneath your line-art and colour in your design.

HAND DRAWN TYPEFACE HOMEWORK

Your homework this weekend is to produce your own hand-drawn typeface on a single sheet of A4.

You must include ALL of the letters of the alphabet from A to Z as well as the numbers 0 to 9.

You should chose to make your alphabet either ALL LOWERCASE or ALL UPPERACASE. There is no need to do BOTH (although you can should you decide you want to!)

Sketch out your design first in blue pencil and then ink your letters in black before Monday's lesson.
